The food borne illness diseases is due to ingestion of infected food.The food borne diseases may be due to either:
Food Infection
Food Intoxication

FOOD INFECTION
Food infections may be sub classified into two types:
The contaminated food does not support the growth of pathogenic organisms but merely carries them. Eg- Diphtheria, Dysentery, Typhoid, Cholera etc.
Food infections in which the food serves as a culture medium for the growth of pathogens to increase in number and cause infection Eg- Salmonellosis, Shigellosis etc.
FOOD INTOXICATION
Food poisoning or intoxication also cause food borne illness. Ingestion of contaminate food cause food poisoning because the food contains toxicants. Food poisoning may be classified as:
Bacterial
fungal
Biological
Chemical

BIOLOGICAL TOXINS
Few Foods in their natural state contain toxic substances in small amounts. Usually body deals with regular but small amounts. This occurs when such foods are consumed in excess.
CHEMICAL POISONING
Food poisoning due to chemicals in food is usually characterised by appearance of the symptoms within short time after eating poisoned food.the chemical enter food may be from utensils, processing equipment, pesticide, or insecticide spray residue on fruits and vegetables.
